Glucometer – a device for determining the level of blood glucose. It has a display on which the blood glucose level is displayed, as well as a hole for entering test strips.
How does a glycometer work
In order to be able to use the packaging of test strips, some glucometers require a code to be entered.
Encoding can be done in many ways. It depends on the model of the meter – use the instructions for the device in order to do it correctly.
Before using the meter for the first time, read the instructions.
Check with your endocrinologist about the possibility of free (preferential) provision of test strips in your region / country.
Blood sampling technique
- Wash and dry your hands before using the meter. If your hands are dirty or wet, the results may be distorted.
- Select a lancet puncture site on the sides of the fingertip. Do not forget to change the puncture site. There are alternative places for taking blood for analysis – palm, forearm, lower leg or thigh (consult your doctor about the use of such places).
- Gently squeeze a drop of blood after an injection with a lancet. Make sure there is enough blood.
- Throw the strip into a jar (which can be closed) or a special container.
Lancet
It is necessary in order to get blood from your finger. There are special automatic devices that quickly inject (lancets are inserted inside these devices).
Do not let other people use your lancet!
The frequency of lancet replacement determines the level of pain in the puncture. It is permissible to use one lancet during the day.
