Diabetes Mellitus, What Is It?

The degree of development of diabetes | Types of diabetes | Prevention

Diabetes mellitus is a disease of the pancreas, during which it stops producing the hormone insulin to break down glucose in the blood. In its absence, a large amount of sugar accumulates in the body.

Lack of treatment can lead to serious consequences.

The degree of development of diabetes mellitus

In world practice, doctors decided to abandon the gradation of the disease by severity, arguing that this would not affect the methods of treating the disease. When a patient gets to the hospital, the doctor reacts faster, knowing the degree of development of the disease. This division into the severity of the disease has repeatedly justified its existence.

Diabetes mellitus is divided into several degrees of severity, these are:

  • Mild.

This is the initial stage of the disease. The pancreas is able to produce insulin. The amount of sugar in the blood does not exceed 7 mmol / l. During the mild stage, doctors prescribe medication to the patient and adherence to a strict diet.

  • Medium severity.

The pancreas continues to produce small amounts of insulin on its own. But this is no longer quite enough. With medium severity of the disease, organs begin to suffer, vision and kidney function may deteriorate. The doctor prescribes a strict diet and sugar-reducing drugs.

  • Severe.

The body begins to suffer significantly from the disease. Frequent headaches, the development of hypoglycemia, a significant decrease in vision are possible. In a severe stage, the pancreas cannot cope with the production of insulin on its own. The body needs to radically change treatment. The patient is given constant injections with insulin.

  • Critical.

The most dangerous stage. Blood sugar goes off scale significantly above normal. A person at this stage of the development of the disease is registered for disability and constant monitoring of the state of his health by doctors is required. If the condition worsens, there is a risk of falling into a coma.

Types of diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is divided into 2 types. These types may differ in terms of the stages of development of the disease and the reasons for its occurrence. However, at the last stage of the development of the disease, the lines between the types are erased and the treatment proceeds in the same way. It is impossible to cure diabetes mellitus in the last stages. The patient’s condition can be maintained.

  • Type 1 diabetes mellitus. This disease is autoimmune. The endocrine system of the body suffers. The main indicator for diagnosing type 1 is chronic hyperglycemic disease.
  • Diabetes mellitus type 2. In the second type of disease, tissue cells in the body are unable to properly absorb insulin. As a result, diabetes mellitus develops. At the first stage of type 2 diabetes mellitus, it is possible to stop the development of the disease, following all the doctor’s recommendations.
