Tattooing and Diabetes: the Pros and Cons

Risks and precautions | Dia-tattoos

Today let’s talk about diabetes. Agree, friends, that in the practice of each esthetician and artist there have been cases when clients came to you and asked the question “Can I get tattoos with diabetes?” In this article we will try to understand this issue in detail.

Risks and precautions

“Diabetes is not a disease, but a way of life” – this is how most people with this disease think. When deciding to get a tattoo, people with diabetes come to the artist, discuss the sketch, make a record and talk about their status as diabetics. And then reality awaits them: the tattoo artist, having learned about the presence of diabetes in the client, may refuse, since it is believed that diabetes is a contraindication to the tattoo. Is it so? Let’s figure it out.

Diabetes is not a disease, but a way of life

So, if a person has diabetes mellitus well controlled – there are no contraindications and you can get a tattoo. BUT! Consultation with your endocrinologist is mandatory. If diabetes is not controlled, then it is worth postponing the tattoo until normalization (compensation) of the condition. It is better to make tattoos, work on which can be completed in one session. If the body does not respond well to the process of applying a tattoo, it will be difficult to complete it.

Each tattoo artist should remember four important rules when applying a tattoo to a person with diabetes:

  • Do not tattoo on injection sites;
  • During the process of applying the tattoo, have something sweet with you (with pain in the body, adrenaline is released, which lowers blood sugar).
  • Take into account that the tattoo heals longer (complete healing of the skin up to 8 weeks).
  • To inform the client about especially careful care of the applied tattoo: wash more often, apply ointments (which do not create excessive grease), monitor the crusts.

Dia-tattoos

Today in the West and in Europe, people with a diagnosis of diabetes have common club tattoos – Dia tattoos. Dia-tattoos are tattoos of “diabetic” subjects, they are of two types. The first type of dia-tattoo is tattoos, warning that a person has diabetes. They combine the inscription – the name of the disease and a stylized medical symbol. Such tattoos began in the army, when the military applies tattoos with the blood group, which in critical situations can save a life. But warning dia-tattoos are not common among us and others may simply not understand their symbolism.

The second type of dia-tattoo is the drawing of drawings symbolizing belonging to diabetes (insulin syringes, a pump, a test strip, etc.). Such tattoos are made by courageous people who are not afraid of their disease and have learned to live with it. A tattoo is forever. So, deciding to get a tattoo, evaluate your health, consult your doctor and then go for it!
